A background map isn’t required but is strongly recommended. Because map layering is time-intensive, only use final versions of map images to avoid the cost of updating and re-releasing.
Once uploaded, map images are aligned precisely to lot lines provided by the engineering company or municipality.
What to Include
We recommend including any elements that your users would find useful, and that are not already provided by the LotWorks map interface. For example:
All lot measurements (dimensions and setback lines)
Garage placements, if applicable
Any service hardware
Lot grading type (e.g., L, BF) - this also appears in the lot detail popup
Streets and street names (Google Maps may not display these in new developments)
What to Avoid
To reduce visual clutter, you may wish to "turn off" the following layers in your map imagery:
Lot numbers and block numbers - these are added by LotWorks automatically
Municipal addresses - LotWorks will display these when a user clicks on the lot
Phase outlines and labels (e.g., “Phase 13”) - these are added by LotWorks automatically
Colour Coding Lots
LotWorks applies its own coloured overlays based on the selected map legend, which can obscure or conflict with any embedded colours in the background map image itself.
NOTE: If you submit map imagery with lots that are colour-coded (e.g. by product type), please note that our standard policy is to de-colourize them and set them to a neutral colour (pale yellow or white) when processing your imagery.
Street and Alley Colours
Use a solid colour (no transparency) for all streets and alleys
Keep colours consistent to prevent visible joins when adding new phases to the community map
